Grocery Store Update:
The community of Cass City has been wanting a grocery store for several years since the closing of Erla’s. Now, it appears that two companies have an interest in building a grocery store. One is on the East side of Cass City and the other is on the West end of Cass City. One store is from Ben’s in Marlette, Michigan and the other company is from Dallas, Texas. Both are working on their financial plans and financing feasibility, although they will be making presentations to the Council. In either case, it will take more than a year to complete their plans.
Team One Credit Union
Team One Credit Union is planning an ATM at the corner of Maple and Main Street. Their proposal has been heard by the Planning Commission and their next step will be to meet with the Zoning Board of Appeals during the month of June. We are happy to have Team One in the Village of Cass City.
Cass City has been identified as a low-to-moderate income community; meaning, a certain percentage of the population is of low income. This has allowed Cass City to receive grants for improvements to our infrastructure in the 2010 Census. We have been identified as simply a moderate community which has allowed us to receive many of the grants that we applied for. We will be requesting the agencies of the state and federal government to allow us to conduct an additional census in the near future. With this additional census, we believe that we will be considered a low-to-moderate income again. It will take some work, but it will be worth it.
Baker College Planning
Baker College has invested money in the former Nestles building on Church Street with a very successful welding shop. They are now considering purchasing the remainder of the building for use by Baker College.
Chamber of Commerce
The Beautification Project is in full swing. Flower pots are in the process of being put in place on Main Street, Rotary Park and the Park. The flowers are looking great this year. Dotty Scollon has agreed to look after them this year and as past years, the village will be watering them. My thanks to Dotty and the village crew for their help with the flowers.
The Freedom Festival planning is coming together. Dates are Thursday 6/30 thru 7/3. Golf and Bingo are the kickoff events on Thursday. We have added some events this year. There will be a corn hole board tournament on Friday evening at Rolling Hills. On Saturday the new events consist of a greased pig contest, a photo booth with props, and a dunk tank. I am looking for a couple of volunteers from the council for the dunk tank. It will be a great way to raise money for fireworks ! ! !
There is a new group being formed called Business Development & Growth Committee. We have had two meetings. Many new ideas are being presented and talked about. Everyone is invited to attend. I will let everyone know when the next meeting will be held.
James Lee Doerr, his brother Michael John, and James Lee’s wife, Brenda, have gifted land to the Village on Third Street in the Village of Cass City, to either be used for recreation or to be sold. The money that is received can be used for the park in memory of their parents. The Village of Cass City thanks them for this extremely generous gift .
Memorial Day Parade
With the assistance of the VFW of Cass City and Council members Steve Erickson and Mark Karwowski, the Memorial Day Parade will be held at 10:00 AM on Memorial Day, May 30, 2016. Thank you to the VFW post and the Council members for their work in assisting the memory of the many who have fallen in the service of our country. God bless America.
Parks and Recreation
Our new Parks and Recreation Director for 2016 is Scott Cuthrell. Scott is a teacher and coach at Cass City High School and a well-respected member of the community. We are grateful that he is joining us for 2016 and beyond. With the changes made in the organization, much work had to be done in a short period of time. Therefore, we thank Scott Cuthrell, Nanette Walsh, Gary Barnes, and his DPW crew for their extra effort in getting everything done in our park. The summer brochures are ready to go and we are excited to kick-off the summer season.
